Seven out of eight top players advance to quarterfinals in MC

No surprises with Nadal, Djokovic, Federer moving on to quarterfinals

Thursday, April 17, under a very pleasant Mediterranean sun top-seeded players battled in both center court and court of the Princes with 7 out of the 8 best qualifying for the quarterfinals. It all started with France’s favorite son Jo-Wilfred Tsonga who defeated temperamental Fabio Fognini in a problematic tight match in three sets. The French celebrated his 29th birthday by passing to the next round to confront World no. 4 wild-carded Swiss Roger Federer. World no. 1 Rafa Nadal registered a record of 300 tournaments on clay wins by dismissing Andreas Seppi 6-1, 6-3, having won his first clay-court match back in 2002 in his native Mallorca, and will meet countryman David Ferrer for a tough match with two clay specialists. Roger Federer did away with Czech Lukas Rosol in two sets in 57 minutes after said it “was a bit rocky” at the beginning but he managed to break back an aggressive opponent and sail through. The other top seeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka had it even easier by having a walkover to the quarterfinals as Nicola Almagro withdrew due to a foot injury and will meet Canadian Milos Raonic next. Reigning champion Novak Djokovic claimed his 12th win in a row easily terminated lucky loser Pablo Carreno Busta in 47minutes of flawless tennis not even breaking a sweat, and will continue his favored draw by facing unseeded Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez who joins the best of the best.
