Italian Marco Gallo claimed the Monaco Europa Cup–Laser trophy this past weekend

East wind made for a perfect Sunday at the regattas

On Sunday, December 4, 2016, an East wind rising up to 20 knots provided the perfect stage for the third and last day of regattas of the Monaco Europa Cup that started on December 2, with 230 sailors representing eleven nationalities competing in five categories, organised by the Yacht Club of Monaco.

It was again the Laser Standard that opened the fight in the successive three stages of the day without a glitch. It was the Italian Marco Gallo, the favorite, with two Olympic preparations in 2012 and 2016, who dominated the event from start to finish, followed by his countryman Nicolo Villa and then the Russian Maxim Nikolaev.

On the other hand the Laser 4.7 Masculin, the youngest of this competition, caused some difficulties to the racing committee multiplying the false departs. After many general reminders that enabled to make a selection among the ranks, and plenty of disqualifications, Francesco Viel won in front of Aessandro Fornasari, followed by Simone Scarpetta. In the same Laser 4.7 Feminine, Federica Cattarozzi came at the top in the final general classification.

In Laser Radial, where girls and boys sailed together, the females were at the same level of the men during the two first stages of the jour in spite of the tough conditions. But supremacy remained with Italian Guido Gallinaro who got the first place, followed very closely by Paolo Giargia and Jacopo Scornaienghi. In the feminine classification, Suisse Maud Jayet claimed victory in front of Carolina Albano and Valentina Balbi, all demonstrating high tactical and technical abilities.

Satisfaction from the Monegasques, as two sailors from the YCM Sportive Section, arrived in the top 10: Jeremy Moutout with the 8th place and Nicolas Rolaz the 10th. An encouraging result for Jeremy who Saturday will depart for Auckland in New Zealand to participate in the Youth Sailing World Championship from December 14-20, 2016.
