F1 Drivers racing on football field to raise funds for children
Just before the launching of the 76thedition of the Grand Prix of Monaco, the A.S. Star Team for the Children inviting world known celebrities from the F1 and motorsports for the traditional charity football match. Once again high level sportspeople said present in spite of their very charged calendar, thanks in great part to the very discreet Mauro Serra, Executive President of the A.S. Star Tam and his team, who each year organizes this solidarity match, opening the festivities around the Monaco Gran Prix.
Tuesday, May 22, started with gray skies and thunderstorms over the Principality and Menton village, with organizers wondering if the field of the Stade Lucien Rhein in Menton could bear all that rain. Then a round 15:30 the skies opened and the rain stopped. Players started to arrive with smiles on their faces erasing their bad weather worries.
The Drivers Team, former and present, counted with Carlo Sainz Junior, Monegasque Charles Leclerc, Maro Engel from Venturi Formule E, Felipe Massa, Pierre Gasly, 2016 F1 World Champion Nico Rosberg, Mika Hakkinen, Mick Schumacher son of Michael (Photo: The F1 Pilots Team group photo AS World STAR TEAM 2018@ JM Follete). While the A.S. Star Team lead by coach Claudio Ranieri has in their effective Flavio Roma, Gregory Campi, Louis Ducruet, William Galas and Marco Simone to name a few.
After the official welcome of H.S.H. Prince Albert by the Mayor of Menton, Jean-Claude Guibal and Mauro Serra, it was the turn to the official teams to enter the field, for a photo session and National Anthems. Prince Albert for the AS Star Team and Felipe Massa for the F1 Drivers Team, exchanged pennants before kick off.
All along the match, good humor and camaraderie reigned on the football field in front of a large audience who made the trip to Menton to support the two teams. It was the first time the charity match took place outside the Principality, because the Stade Louis II was not available due to ongoing works on their field.
The A.S. Star Team for the Children claimed victory! At the conclusion of the match Prince Albert congratulated Claudio Ranieri for his loyalty to the team as a coach. Then Prince Albert proceeded to deliver a trophy to Ariane Fontana, speed skater on short course, Winter Olympic Gaems 2018, and Federica Brignone, Bronze medalist in Giant Slalom in Winter Olympic Games 2018 in Korea. The Captain of the AS Star Team received the Winner’s trophy from Prince Albert, followed by the deliver of the cup to Gianfranco Fisichella for the Drivers Team.
The proceeds from the Charity Football match will benefit an association to be selected by Prince Albert.
