European clay season inaugurated in Monte-Carlo
This Friday, April 12, 2019, was the Official Draw ceremony of the highly anticipated 112th edition of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, first European tournament of the clay season of the prestigious ATP World Tour Masters 1000 category. The draw, that changes venue every year, took place in the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel, the official hotel of the tournament. The competition will run from Saturday, April 13 through Sunday, April 21, 2019, with the top ATP ranked players battling on the courts of the legendary Monte-Carlo Country Club.
The guest of honor was no other than the defending champion King of Clay, World No. 2 Spaniard Rafael Nadal (b.1986), winner of last year’s tournament, and who will try to conquer his 12th crown, and in the presence of tournament director extraordinaire and former tennis player, Croatian Zeljko Franulovic, accompanied by Elizabeth-Anne de Massy, President of the Monte-Carlo Country Club and the Monegasque Tennis Federation, her daughter Melanie-Antoinette de Massy, Patrice Cellario, Minister of Interior, Chris Kermode, ATP CEO, and other distinguished personalities, and members of the local and international media.
Singles draw unveiled
The Singles Draw revealed that both No. 1 Novak Djokovic, the two-time champion, and No. 2 defending champion Rafael Nadal, will not have an easy road to conquer the trophy in Monte-Carlo, as they will have to confront several tough opponents among the next generation players on each side, once the official matches start on Sunday. If he were to win it would be Rafa’s 12thcrown and his 55thclay court triumph. He won this tournament for the first time in 2003, around the time we moved to Monaco, so we have been witness to his many victories. Vamos Rafa!
Charity exhibition benefiting Monaco Red Cross
Tournament qualifications start on Saturday, April 13 at 11:00. The first match will be followed by a charity exhibition benefiting the Monaco Red Cross. The participating players will be Dominic THIEM, Stefanos TSITSIPAS, Karen KHACHANOV, Grigor DIMITROV, Lucas POUILLE, Stan WAWRINKA, David GOFFIN, Andrei MEDVEDEV, and Fabio FOGNINI.
After the charity exhibition, the qualifying matches will resume.
