From successful film star to Princess of Monaco
On May 15, 2019, Princess Charlene inaugurated the Artist’s Tributes exhibition “Grace Kelly: from Hollywood to Monaco”, in the heart of the Galaxy Macao™ complex, that traces the story of Oscar-winning Grace Kelly (1929-1982). The Grimaldi Forum co-organized this exceptional exposition with the Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG), within the framework of Art Macao, a five-month colossal international cultural event.
Grace Kelly became an influential icon of the 20thcentury, epitomizing the myths of royalty and eternity explaining the perpetual interest and fascination by people everywhere. She started out as a successful American star of Hollywood films in the ’50s, Grace, and ended up as Princess of Monaco, becoming part of a royal European family that dates back almost a millennium. She was a source of inspiration to artists throughout her life, from renowned photographers to painters such as Andy Warhol; famous filmmakers such as Alfred Hitchcock who directed his series of films starring Grace Kelly; plus sculptors, jewelers and fashion designers depicting her signature everlasting style. Grace continues to be an inspiration even after her tragic disappearance, and this exhibition underlines, not only her role as a muse but most importantly her own personal devotion to artistic creation. After her death, Prince Rainier III honored his wife’s love of the arts by establishing The Princess Grace Foundation, USA, a non-profit, publicly supported charity, headquartered in New York City. The mission of the Foundation is to identify and assist emerging talent in theater, dance, and film by awarding grants in the form of scholarships, apprenticeships, and fellowships.
‘Grace Kelly, from Hollywood to Monaco’ combines two previous productions: ‘The Grace Kelly Years’, dating back to 2007, whose tour raised Monaco’s profile around the world and, ‘Princes and Princesses of Monaco – A European Dynasty’, presented in Beijing’s Forbidden City in 2018.
This unprecedented show also includes a temporary gallery that displays the collections from the Prince’s Palace and the Audiovisual Institute of Monaco, with photographs, moving images, her Oscar Award, wedding gown, the namesake Kelly Bag, designer jewelry, and a new rare portrait print by Andy Warhol. The Grimaldi Forum was responsible for the stage setting —designed as a journey that integrates history, heritage, fashion and art — and the logistical implementation, all under the close supervision of Dr. Thomas Fouilleron, Curator of the exhibition and Director of Archives and Library at the Prince’s Palace of Monaco.
